This is one of those blog entries that answers some of the most common questions we’re asked here at WorkoutBOX.

When starting a gym-based workout program, all those weights can look pretty intimidating. Don’t worry – this is natural, and should pass when you get some answers.

How do I know I’m doing everything right?

What weights should I be using?

These are two common questions that everyone has when just starting out. Rather than dance around and dress up the answers, I’ll give them to you straight in 5 easy steps:

Step 1:

Don’t skip the instructions. Read them. All of them. Be sure you know what you’re supposed to be doing and why during a specific cycle. You may know all of them by heart, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Step 2:

Watch the videos for the exercises you’re going to be performing. As you watch them, dissect the movement. Stand up and replicate it right in front of your computer. You don’t have to use weights, just follow along and make sure you know how to move your body in the right way.

Step 3:

Print out your workout. You can do this each day, you can do it once each week, or you can do it once each phase. Just be sure you bring it with you to your workout. Having it on hand makes sure you can get in, go down the list, and get out and back to your day.

Step 4:

While performing exercises at the gym, periodically do so in front of a mirror, both straight on and sideways. Watch your back in particular. It should be lordotic and NEVER rounded.

Step 5:

Choose a weight with which you can perform all required reps with good technique, but that really challenges you towards the end of your last few sets. Always prioritize technique before weight. Until you master a technique, don’t add too much weight.

Following these 5 steps will eliminate a number of potential questions that you may (and should) have when getting started.
